North Devon Record Office

The Office was originally a branch of Devon Record Office, and was established in 1988.  

They are one of three organisations in North Devon Local Studies Centre, Tuly Street, Barnstaple, the other organisations being North Devon Local Studies Library and the North Devon Athenaeum.

The Office holds archives relating to North Devonshire.  Collections held by the Archive include materials of North Devonshire and Torridge District Councils, the boroughs of Barnstaple, Bideford, South Molton and Great Torrington and most Anglican parishes.

Directions and Opening Hours can be found by going to the appropriate sections of their visiting us page.  If travelling by train, the Archive is 15 minutes walk from Barnstaple Railway Station.  If travelling by bus, most buses stop at Barnstaple Bus Station, which is 10 minutes walk from the Office.

Please note it is prudent to contact them before you visit to avoid disappointment, especially if you live some distance away.

The Local Studies Centre has 4 microfilm readers, 8 microfiche readers, 2 microform reader printers, a photocopier and 4 public access computers.  Census Returns and Parish Registers of baptisms, marriages and burials are available on microfilm.

You are able to use a digital camera, but a charge is made for using this service.

If you wish to walk to the Office, it is 15-20 minutes walk from the city centre, 10-15 minutes from the main bus station and 20-25 minutes from Plymouth Railway Station.  Bus stops are available near the Office in Sutton Road and Exeter Street.  A free car park is next to the Office.

Please note it is prudent to book before visiting. They are able to accept bookings up to one month in advance of a proposed visit. You can also possible to book a table or a microfiche reader.

You are able to use a digital camera, but a charge for using this service. 

If you are unable to visit in person, they provide a list of Archive Researchers.  For a fee, these Agents are willing to undertake research on your behalf.
